SPRING 2023
SPRING 2023 -
In the northern hemisphere, spring usually includes the months of March, April & May – a time when the Earth’s axis tilts a bit more towards the sun, days get longer, and the planet comes to life with new growth and color as winter slowly loses its icy grip. Spring is often described as a time of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, growth and celebration. The beauty and color of spring rivel that of other seasons – even autumn; unfortunately, spring and its beautiful color are fleeting. I hope you’ve had the chance to get out and enjoy spring 2023. If not, here are a few favorite images to help bring spring to you and to help enjoy the season.
The Sarvis tree (above) is a beautiful sentinel of spring in Appalachia. Photographed at West Virginia’s Blackwater Falls State Park, it is one of the earliest flowering trees to bloom. I enjoy the vibrant contrasts of the darks and lights in this image.
REDBUDS - Redbud trees are another favorite spring sentinel. The beautiful Redbud tree above is a highlight of Valley Falls along the Tygart River in West Virginia; The nearby bench, a perfect place to sit and enjoy a bit of spring next to the roar of the falls.
Beautiful Redbuds also decorate the headwaters of the Potomac River flowing on it’s tortuous path down through the mountains to our Nation’s capital. The blue-green waters of this mountain stream seem to accent the saturated pink & violet colors of the redbuds in the photograph above. These are great trout fishing waters.
The Redbuds trees below, photographed along Cheat Lake near Morgantown, WV are captured in the following two images. One image from a few years back shows the old, iron Ices Ferry Bridge framed by spring by redbuds. This old bridge was built in 1922 and (unfortunately) demolished in 2012. This image of the bridge in spring is one of my favorites.
Spring also ushers in trout fishing season in Appalachia. The watercolor painting below depicts a Rainbow trout after a Royal Coachman dry fly on a small mountain stream in spring.
The beautiful weeping willow tree below - branches flowing in the breeze - heralds the arrival of spring.
Ending with a bit of abstract photography – the motion blur image below, Spring Breeze, depicts beautiful spring trees in bloom taken on an afternoon drive.
