West Virginia’s mountains are home to many striking waterfalls and December is the perfect time to get out and enjoy these falls now beautifully decorated in winter’s snow and ice. Douglass Falls (below) is located on the North Fork of the Blackwater River just outside Thomas, WV. These falls are known for their characteristic burnt sienna rock color due to acid seepage from nearby beehive coke ovens along the river. (Still standing but now dormant, these ovens were active in the late 1800’s to produce coke, from coal, for the thriving steel industry to the north in Pittsburgh, PA). The vibrant river rocks serve to accentuate the turbulent white waters of Douglass Falls creating its iconic, colorful appearance.
